ANODE ROD 1" X 36" by Lochinvar & A.O. Smith [100232745] The Lochinvar & A.O. Smith Anode Rod is a sacrificial anode designed to protect water heaters from corrosion. It is made of magnesium and is 1 inch in diameter and 36 inches long. The anode rod is installed in the water heater tank and slowly dissolves over time, releasing magnesium ions into the water. These ions react with the oxygen in the water to form a protective layer of magnesium oxide on the inside of the tank, which helps to prevent corrosion.
